The effect of acetate, pyruvate, and glucose on alcohol metabolism.

چکیده
Although many investigators have studied the effects of pyruvate and glucose on alcohol metabolism, there is still disagreement as to what effect. they have on the rate of alcohol oxidat.ion. Jacobsen (1) discussed t.he various reports in which the results vary from no effect of pyruvate, inhibition by pyruvate or glucose, or an actual increase in the rate of alcohol oxidation by pyruvate or glucose. Bartlett and Barnet (Z), using radioactive ethanol, concluded that alcohol metabolism was markedly inhibited by pyruvat,e. Only one animal was used, however, and only one level of alcohol studied. A more extensive study by the tracer technique has therefore been done with both acetate and pyruvate. Acetate was used since its oxidation involves t.he same metabolic pathways as pyruvate t,hrough the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Thiamine-deficient animals were included, since pyruvate oxidation should be part, ially blocked under these conditions. The effect of glucose on blood alcohol disappearance in human beings was also studied.

2-(3-Methyl-cinnamyl-hydrozono)-propionate stimulated glucose oxidation in human mononuclear leukocytes and the stimulation was similar to that by concanavalin A. Both substances must affect glucose metabolism at two sites, the first site being before the pyruvate dehydrogenase step because of the increase of lactate plus pyruvate concentration. The second site is related to pyruvate oxidation....
متن کاملTHE UTILIZATION IN VITRO OF Cr4-LABELED ACETATE AND PYRUVATE BY DIAPHRAGM MUSCLE OF RAT*
The usefulness of the rat diaphragm technique of Gemmill in the study of carbohydrate metabolism of muscle in vitro has been demonstrated by the experiments of Gemmill (1, Z), Stadie (3, 4), Krahl and Cori (5), Krahl and Park (6), and Verzar and Wenner (7, 8). The adaptation of this technique to experiments by use of Cr4-labeled glucose was described in a previous paper (9). In those experiment...
متن کاملPyruvate and acetate metabolism in the isolated rat diaphragm.
Previous experiments (l-6) have indicated that, in addition to an impairment of glucose utilization, diabetic muscle suffers some involvement of its oxidative metabolism. Villee and coworkers (l-3) and Pearson et al. (5) reported that the utilization of pyruvate by the isolated diabetic rat diaphragm was significantly lower than normal. In addition, the oxidation of pyruvate-2-C4 and acetate-l-...
متن کاملEffect of Organic Substrate on Promoting Solventogenesis in Ethanologenic Acetogene Clostridium ljungdahlii ATCC5538
Clostridium ljungdahlii is a strictly anaerobic acetogene known for its ability to ferment a wide variety of substrates to ethanol and acetate. This bacterium presents a complex anaerobic metabolism including the acetogenic and solventogenic phases. In this study, the effect of various carbon sources on triggering the metabolic shift toward solventogenesis was considered. The bacterium was grow...
